latin: Os sternum

common: Breast bone

The breast bone is the vertical flat bone in the center of the chest. The breast bone is connected to the 14 true ribs (7 on each side).

Below the breast bone are the hart, the lungs and the gullet.

The breast bone consists of three parts: the handle (top), the body of sternum and the xiphoid process (bottom). These three parts can fuse together during adulthood (around the 30st year), but this is not always the case.
