The thickened upper border of the Ilium is called the Iliac Crest. It has a lot of muscles attached to it.
You can easily feel (and see) the Iliac Crest in the shape of the human body. To find the Iliac Crest do as follows: Stand up and run both hands down the ribs at the side of your body. Just below the ribs is a bony prominence which is the iliac crest. Many people also simply call it the hip.
In muscular bodies that are also exceptionally lean, you can see the inguinal ligament below the skin. In the photo you can see this ligament as a groove that runs from the pubic bone (the lower arrow) to the front of the Iliac Crest (the upper arrow).
