lumbar vertebrae (5)

The lower back consists of five (six for some people) vertebrae numbered L1 to L5. The lower back (lumbar vertebrae) allows a lot more motion that the thoracic spine and carries the bulk of the body's weight. Because of this, the lumbar vertebrae are the largest. Also this part of the spine is the most likely to get injured.
