The tailbone consists of a group of 3 to 5 fused vertebrae. An important function of the tailbone is the protection of nerves that are located in the lower back region.
Several small muscles are connected to the tailbone and are important in moving and protecting a number of internal organs. Furthermore, some of the muscles necessarily for walking upright are connected to the tailbone.
Another function of the tailbone is shock absorption when sitting down.
